Questions and answers about our stealth technology

  • What type of materials can be made Radar Absorbing Materials with Micromag’s Technology?

Micromag Technology is based in the integration of a small number of microfibers that easily mix with many different materials. So far, Micromag has successfully produced coatings, glass reinforced materials (epoxies and polyesters), silicones, foams, plastics… Nonetheless, we are always looking at new possibilities and will consider each particular client with great care.

  • What’s the working principle of Micromag Radar Absorbing Materials?

Micromag Radar Absorbing Materials (RAM) are achieved by controlling the electrical permittivity of composites resulting from mixing Micromag microfibers with a base material. Controlling the permittivity of the composites delivers RAM that can be considered a hybrid between a Salisbury screen (quarter wavelength destructive interference) and a Dallenbach layer (loss mechanisms), achieving thin materials compared to the working wavelength of the radar.

  • What type of dB attenuation is to be expected?

Attenuations of -10 dB are easily achievable. Larger attenuations are also possible if needed. However, delivering larger attenuations imply higher treatment times and costs.

  • What frequencies are covered?

Micromag tailor fits its products to clients’ specifications. Micromag has extensively worked from 2 up to 18 GHz, but it has the know-how to work outside these frequencies. Micromag materials can be made single (one single frequency of maximum attenuation) or double band (two frequencies of maximum attenuation).

  • Does Micromag offer a wideband material?

Wideband materials are on offer, performances depend on the bands required to cover. Ask for more detailed information.

  • Can the client choose the frequency of maximum attenuation?

Yes! Micromag tailor fits its products to clients’ specifications.

  • What are typical thicknesses for Micromag Radar Absorbing Materials?

It will depend on the base material and the desired frequency of maximum attenuation. Nevertheless, Micromag respects customer desired base material specifications and applications. So for example, for glass reinforced materials Micromag will work with the customer so as not to alter the existing structure, so, whenever possible there is no added thickness. For coatings, Micromag fibers are mixed only in the interlayers, so primer and top coat are left unchanged. Single X-Band attenuation coating thicknesses are around 1 – 1.5 mm. Double band materials are slightly thicker.

  • How much does it weight?

Micromag added weight of microfibers is in the order of tens of grams. The total weight of the RAM will be determined by the base material and the chosen frequency of maximum attenuation. When the structure provides the sufficient thickness, as glass reinforced products, the added weight is negligible.

  • Do the materials degrade with time?

Adding Micromag fibers to a base material only changes its electromagnetic properties and the resulting composite will degrade because of the base material but not because of Micromag fibers. Micromag provides a working guarantee of 5 or more years.

  • How is the Radar Absorbing Solution implemented?

It will depend on the structure and base material chosen. On a regular basis, Micromag personnel deploys to the customer facilities and oversees the implementation of the Radar Absorbing Solution, making frequent quality checks to make sure that the implementation is a success.

  • How long does it take to make my structure stealth?

This question does not have a straight forward answer as it raises many other questions: How big is the structure? What frequency/ies are you interested in? Is it going to be painted or is it a glass reinforced structure? On average, applying Micromag solution can take from two to four weeks.

  • Why should you choose Micromag’s Radar Absorbing Materials over other solutions?

Micromag RAMs have been developed to last! Micromag microfibers are integrated within the structure itself or the coating of the structure, so they can withstand the harsh environments sensitive radar targets are subjected to. There is no risk of the RAM falling off because of humidity or strong winds. Moreover, with Micromag materials you can cover your whole structure, significantly reducing the overall RCS of your structure.
